The man, whose identity has not been released, has died after being among three people “allegedly stung hundreds of times” by the bee swarm in Marana, the Northwest Fire District said on Facebook.

The other two people needed medical attention. The swarm forced a residential street to be closed for several hours in the northwestern city of Tucson.

Three firefighters who answered the call, including one who was hospitalized and then released, were also stung.

Workers discovered an open beehive in a nearby tree. They estimated he weighed around 100 pounds, according to the Northwest Fire District.

“The bee handlers killed most of the bees and removed the hive,” the Marana Police Department said on Facebook. “Although the area is much safer, there are still some evergreen bees.”

Police have warned residents of the neighborhood to be cautious.
