INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A 4-year-old girl, a 16-year-old girl and three men were shot dead outside a funeral home on the northwest side on Saturday, and the 4-year-old was in critical condition at Riley Children’s Hospital , police said.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and medical teams were notified of the shots fired around 4:35 p.m. Saturday at Sprowl Funeral & Cremation Care, 1134 W. 30th St. It is southwest of the interchange. I-65 for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Rue.

Investigators believe only one gunman was involved and the shooting was not considered a random act, Officer Genae Cook said at an impromptu press conference on West 30th and Clifton Streets. At this intersection, police surrounded a car. The mother-of-one was trying to use the car to take the injured girl to the hospital when the doctors arrived; the mother was not injured.

Police believe a man got out of a truck, approached a vehicle in a narrow parking lot next to the funeral home, and an argument began. A man then started shooting randomly around the parking lot and at the truck, Cook said. The altercation allegedly started with a person inside the funeral home.

No gunshot was reportedly fired inside the funeral home.

The 16-year-old was in a stable at Eskenazi Hospital.

One of the men was stable at IU Health Methodist Hospital.

Shortly after the shooting, two other men entered the IU Methodist Health Hospital at different times with gunshot wounds. These men were stable and in good condition. “We believe these two people were involved, or were here at the scene at one point or another,” she said.

The 4-year-old was part of a group attending a funeral.

Cook said: ‘It’s a shame, you know, we are here in a funeral home, where the family is gathered to send condolences to their own family, and the next thing you know, we have other people injured. . You know, that’s not how Indianapolis works. We have to think about our actions, think about what we are doing.

The person remembered at the funeral was not a victim of an Indianapolis crime.

It was unclear whether the shooting suspect would attend the funeral.

Police interviewed people who attended the funeral and watched surveillance video of the area, Cook said.

The IMPD tweeted at 5:49 pm: “Traffic alert: Block 1100 of W 30th near Clifton is closed due to an active investigation. Please search for an alternate route. PIO is on the scene.

Statements

“This afternoon our community witnessed yet another violent incident, this time with several victims, including a young child. Tonight our thoughts are with everyone affected, including those injured in the shooting, their families and a neighborhood marked by cowardice. Far too many residents have suffered the consequences of the combination of guns and failed conflict resolution and I join a frustrated community in calling for an end to this cycle of violence.

The IMPD and the City of Indianapolis will continue to try all the solutions, to incorporate all the best practices possible. But you can’t do it alone. Neighbors will have to share information, support those who are suffering, intervene when someone goes down a dangerous path.

I urge anyone with information on this incident to share what they know and contact Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS.
