The Padres have placed the shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. and right handed Chris Paddack on the 10-day casualty list. Tatis is on IL with an inflamed left shoulder after leaving last night’s game with a shoulder problem following a slip to third base. Paddack was sidelined with a left oblique stump, and his placement is retroactive to July 28.
In the corresponding movements, the Padres also chose the right-handed Nabil Crismatt to Triple-A when calling right-handed people Miguel diaz and Reiss Knehr, and newly acquired outfielder Jake Marisnick has been added to the active list.
This is the second time Tatis’s troublesome left shoulder has sent him to the injured list this season. Tatis has since missed a few games with mild shoulder pain, but the Padres manager Jayce tingler says Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune (Twitter connections) and other reporters that Tatis’ shoulder was “more painfulThe day after this injury than during his past aggravations to the shoulder.
According to Acee, there is no indication yet that the Padres are considering shutting down Tatis following these recurring injuries. If surgery is the only way to completely correct the problem, that would obviously put Tatis on the sidelines for the remainder of this season and potentially until 2022, depending on the extent of the procedure and the severity of the shoulder damage. The fact that Tatis has been able to bounce back several times this year and still produce at a superstar level gives hope that he can also recover from this latest setback, although it would appear that Tatis will need more than just the minimum of 10. days of recovery time.
There is no way to replace Tatis, of course, although the acquisition of San Diego Adam frazier last week now seems all the more important. Jake cronenworth can slide to shortstop while Frazier takes over as planned at second base, but this scenario also interrupts the Padres’ initial plan – using Cronenworth at first base and Frazier as a super utility around the diamond, providing coverage and depth behind Eric hosmer and Wil myers. Ha Seong Kim and Jurickson Profar are also available as utility options.
Losing Paddack is no small feat for the Padres either, who have been constantly hampered by rotational injuries all season. San Diego was rumored to be considering multiple starters before the trade deadline, but the reliever Daniel hudson ended up being their only new arm. Paddack was due to start on Sunday, but the Padres could now look to Knehr or another option for tomorrow’s game.
Paddack threw better (3.92 SIERA) than his 5.13 ERA would indicate, although he allowed a lot of hard contact. Perhaps the key stat is 93 innings pitched, as Paddack has been a reliable and enduring member of the starting staff outside of a 10-day COVID absence at the start of the season. The right-hander has a below-average strikeout rate, but he’s been one of the best at limiting free passes; Paddack’s walk rate is only five percent.
