The Dodgers placed the right-hander Tony Gonsolin on the 10-day injured list due to inflammation of the right shoulder, and also sent right-handed Brusdar graterol and acrobat Luc Raley to Triple-A. The trio of hits paves the way for Max Scherzer be enabled on the Dodgers roster, while righty Edwin uceta and left-handed Garrett cleavinger were called from Triple-A.
It seems likely that Gonsolin’s shoulder problem contributed to his rough start last night, as he only lasted 1 2/3 of an inning while allowing two runs on a hit and five walks in the loss. 6-5 for the Dodgers against the Diamondbacks. Control has been an unusually big issue for Gonsolin this season, as his 16.5% walk rate is one of the worst of any pitching with at least 30 innings pitched.
Since Gonsolin didn’t make his season debut until June 9 with a shoulder inflammation, the Dodgers kept his workload limited, but the right-hander has always posted quality results. Gonsolin has a 2.78 ERA despite his free pass problem, as he has an above-average strikeout rate of 26.6% and has done a good job limiting hard contacts.
Gonsolin joins Clayton kershaw and new achievements Danny duffy on the casualty list, as Scherzer’s acquisition was intended to help correct the lack of available depth of rotation. If everyone is healthy, Los Angeles will have a formidable array of pitchers available for the playoffs, although even the Dodgers’ depth has been put to the test by several pitcher’s injuries this season.
