When Samsung confirmed that there would indeed be no Galaxy Note 21 in 2021 after nearly a year of speculation, the company knew people would be disappointed. But he was perhaps still a little surprised at the depth of sentiment demonstrated by a petition urging a change of course.
The Change.org petition, curated somewhat optimistically by Sammobile, urges Samsung to “skip the Galaxy S22 lineup next year and give us a rating instead.” At the time of writing, it has been signed by more than 17,000 people since its publication on July 30.
Such a change could, according to the petition, “keep all of its flagship lines alive by alternating between them, while keeping all of its fans happy at the same time,” which seems a little improbable. Those who want to get their hands on the Samsung Galaxy S22 probably wouldn’t be too impressed to see that their preferred handset has been replaced by another.
But really, this is a moot point. Frankly, it would be amazing if this petition spelled out its goal achieved, regardless of how many people end up signing up. The S22 is said to have been in development for some time, unlike a new Note. There is simply no way for Samsung to change tracks now, even if it wanted to.
And that in itself is a huge “if”. The company will have cold, hard numbers to back up its decision to suspend the rating on the S line, and a relatively small group of diehard fans signing a petition won’t change that analysis significantly.
This does not mean that the petition will have no impact. It will be reassuring to the company that the Note line has a set of fans who will welcome its return if at some point Samsung decides to revive it. After all, Samsung hasn’t said the phone is gone forever, just that the current circumstances around the global chip shortage mean it needs to be a bit more selective about which handsets to prioritize.
While there isn’t much the average person can do to change Samsung’s mind on this, if you really want the note to come back, then voting with your feet will likely be more effective. If the company doesn’t sell as many of its supposed new foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, as it hopes – even with the expected S Pen support and possibly a price drop on the cards. – so Samsung can finally admit that there must be room for a Galaxy Note in its future lineup after all.
