YouTube Premium is a solid option if you want pay to get through its often heartbreaking advertising. But that’s about $ 12 per month on top of a whole slew of other subscription services that you’re probably already paying for. The price includes access to YouTube Music, offline downloads, and background playback. But for anyone who doesn’t want those extras, the price of the current subscription may be too high.
YouTube is working on acmore compact version of YouTube Premium which avoids the additional features in favor of blocking advertisements. It’s called Premium Lite, and it’s currently tested in a few European countries, including Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden.
You can technically visit the Premium Lite page now. If you are visiting from an IP address outside of the regions mentioned above, you will get a splash screen telling you that no offers are available. But with the help of a VPN app that connected me to the servers in Amsterdam, I got to the screen prompting me to sign up for YouTube Premium Lite.
A user in the Reset Era forums initially discovered the existence of YouTube Premium Lite. YouTube has confirmed its existence at The edge with the following statement:
In the Nordic countries and the Benelux (excluding Iceland), we are testing a new offer to give users even more choice: Premium Lite costs € 6.99 / month (or local equivalent per month) and includes ad-free videos on YouTube

YouTube Premium currently costs € 12 per month in Europe, roughly the same price as in the US, taking the conversion into account. Premium Lite costs just over half the price and will allow ad-free viewing on YouTube on all platforms, including desktop, iOS, Android, smart TVs and game consoles. It will also eliminate advertising from the YouTube Kids app, which may be worth the effort for some parent’s peace of mind.
Of course, kinda like how To tasteWell promised us in the 90s that it was as delicious as a cookie full of calories – which turned out to be a hell of a lie –YouTube Premium Lite will not have all the skins of the current Premium level. There will be no background playback or offline downloads, and you will not have access to YouTube Music.
It is not clear if YouTube Premium Lite eventually find its way to other markets, but IIt will be interesting to see how Google the prices for families and students. Currently, families of up to five members pay $ 18 per month for YouTube Premium, and students pay $ 7. I would gladly pay for a family plan for all of my family, even the baby, if that means I never get to see another plot ad.
