Selena Gomez is calling The good fight for a reference to the kidney transplant she received in 2017.

A scene aired in the legal drama last month featured some of the characters debating what they could and couldn’t joke about: Gomez’s transplant fell into the latter category. Gomez fans then sent the “RESPECT SELENA GOMEZ” trend.

The actress and singer responded on Tuesday. “I don’t know how to write organ transplant jokes for TV shows has become one thing, but unfortunately it apparently is,” she wrote. “I hope that in the next writer’s room, when one of these tasteless jokes is presented, it will be immediately exposed and will not go on the air.”

She also thanked her dedicated fans and then went further. She asked them to register to be organ donors.

Gomez’s own donor was a close friend, Francia Raisa. At the time, Gomez explained that the operation was necessary because of his battle with lupus. And she spent some time out of the spotlight to recover. Over the years that followed, she shared her story and became an organ donation activist.

Although a transplant is a serious subject, it has once been exploited for entertainment. Peacock Saved by the Bell reboot – a comedy thoroughly – mentioned it sadly in an episode of November 2020. In it, two characters argue over who really donated the kidney to Gomez. “I know for a fact that Selena Gomez’s kidney donor was Justin Bieber’s mother,” one character said of Gomez’s former boyfriend. “My God, I wish I had my phone so I could prove it.” Another maintains that it was from her former Barney & Friends co-starring Demi Lovato. A second scene asked if Gomez even had a kidney.

After Gomez supporters returned, the network apologized and deleted the scene. They also pledged to donate to the Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research at the University of Southern California.

Yahoo Entertainment has reached out to Paramount + and CBS Studios for comment.
