The iPhone’s notch has been the same size since its debut with the iPhone X. However, the company has stepped up efforts to reduce the size of the notch with the upcoming iPhone 13 series. Almost all of our Android smartphones. days only switch to a punch-hole camera, Apple is looking to completely eliminate the notch. That said, Apple has secured a new patent that will continue its efforts to eliminate the notch completely.

Future iPhone models could use expanding display technology to eliminate the notch

Spotted by Apple obviously. the patent is entitled “Electronic devices with adjustable display windows”. The patent has been filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The Apple patent explains how the screen can be maneuvered to reveal or hide the front camera and other components or potentially sensors. Apple creates an area called a “window region” on the screen that could house sensors or depth sensing components for Face ID.

The screen would simply move out of the way and leave room for the sensors to do their magic. If sensors or cameras are not needed, the screen simply returns to its position.

An electronic device can have a display with an array of pixels to display images. The display can have a window area. During operation, a component such as an optical component can operate through the window area. The window area can overlap a movable part of the display. The window region can operate in open and closed states. In the closed state, the movable part of the display overlaps the window area and the pixels of the movable display part emit light through the window area. In the open state, the movable part of the display is moved away from the window area so that light for the optical component can pass through the window area. The optical component can be a camera or other component that receives light through the window region or can be an optical component that emits light through the window region.

Apart from that, another method highlighted in the Apple patent shows a flexible display that moves with the help of an actuator. This way the display will be pushed down through which the window region will be available. The patent also describes that the region will contain a coating which will improve the illumination of the optical component. When the optical component is not in use, Apple can use a periscope device to hide it.

The iPhone 13 series notch is generally expected to get smaller without compromising Face ID technology. That’s all there is to it, folks.
