Philip Rivers does not rule out a return from retirement

Longtime NFL quarterback Philip Rivers has already moved on to another aspect of the game just months after retiring from the league.

The 39-year-old works as a high school football coach in Alabama and is admittedly out of shape.

Still, if needed, Rivers said on Tuesday he was ready to make a late-season comeback.

“I’m just going to stay prepared,” he told the Los Angeles Times. “I want to make sure I’m very clear I’m not predicting that I’ll be playing in December or January, for that matter. One, you I’ve got to have someone who wants you, and two, that’s got to be fair.

“But I haven’t ruled that out completely.”

Could Rivers return to the Colts?

Rivers spent 16 seasons in the league with the Chargers and a final year with the Indianapolis Colts before retiring after last season.

The eight-time Pro Bowler threw more than 63,000 yards and 421 touchdowns during his NFL career, both fifth in league history. He had 12 seasons with at least 4,000 passing yards (only Peyton Manning recorded more).

Rivers will likely be inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame.

Rivers is now the head coach of St. Michael’s Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama. He’s not trying to put together an NFL team now or in time for the start of the season. But if it works, he said, he’s more than willing to come back.

The Colts might need him again. Colts quarterback Carson Wentz needs foot surgery to correct an injury he sustained in training last week, coach Frank Reich said on Monday, and will be out for 5 to 12 weeks.

Before you can even think about it, Rivers knows he needs to get back in shape first.

“I’m not quite there,” Rivers told the Los Angeles Times. ” I will return. I wouldn’t have gained any weight if I had to report last week, that’s for sure. But I get back to lifting and running, and I shoot, I throw a ball here in this heat sometimes. It is not too difficult to get a good lather.
