The latest legend to join the Apex Games in Season 10, Seer, comes with some very powerful abilities including a heart rate sensor and tracking drones. But, Respawn told us that he went through three different variations and was actually an audio-focused legend at the start.
The Respawn Entertainment team has created a new Legend every season since its release and continues to improve their gameplay to keep things fresh, with characters featuring a fleshy backstory, extravagant skins, and brilliantly performed voice lines.
Seer is no different from this trend of Legend releases, following the hugely popular Valkyrie released in Season 9.
Immediately after Seer’s abilities were revealed, fans were optimistic that he would be strong, but cautiously worried that he would even be overpowered when he was released. But, when we spoke to some of the Respawn team shortly before the new season’s release, they revealed that their kit isn’t always like this.
The seer was an audio legend
Respawn explained that Seer’s original plan was to have his abilities be entirely audio rather than visual. The first version of his tactic was a decoy grenade, which sometimes mimicked gunfire and other times mimicked footstep audio.
However, despite fooling people during game testing early on, it quickly became apparent that the “fake” sound would become too problematic, as it would make the sound of the whole game unreliable for gamers, and “A little broken the game”.
His ultimate was a sphere-like ability, but instead of following players inside, he would lock all sounds inside. The idea behind this was to prevent attacks from third parties.
Overall, it’s no surprise that these abilities didn’t see the light of day. After all, Apex Legends can be a loud, noisy game at the best of times, and the audio is so crucial to the experience. Not to mention, Respawn struggled with all of the contested sounds in the game, leading players to complain about not being able to hear crucial elements like enemy footsteps.
After moving away from the focus on sound alone, Respawn also tried a proximity mine tactic for Seer. Eventually they switched to the Seer that we now have in the game.
A better bloodhound?
But, in the end, they were content with what we have now – another scout / tracker type character, in a similar vein to Bloodhound.
We also asked Respawn if they were concerned that Seer would make Bloodhound less popular. But, they are convinced that the two characters play quite differently, with Bloodhound focusing on the “embroideries” players leave behind, while Seer is much closer and personal with his abilities.
Likewise, Crypto is considered the ‘long-range’ recognition legend, so developers still believe it will have a place in the meta as well.
We’ll have to wait and see how the meta shakes up in Season 10 to see which of these three recognition legends tops the list.
