As we get closer to the exit of Terror MetroidNintendo has shared several “reports” that showcase different aspects of the game and the franchise, as well as the development team’s contribution. The latest report has now been located and celebrates the franchise’s 35th anniversary, while also giving an interesting nudge or two and winks asking how the main lore will continue in Dread.

On August 6, 1986, the first game in the entire Metroid series — simply titled “Metroid” —was released as a Family Computer Disk System title in Japan (later arriving elsewhere for the Nintendo Entertainment System ™). This game kicked off a saga surrounding the intertwined destinies of bounty hunter Samus Aran and the enigmatic Metroid species, a saga that will end with the upcoming game Metroid Dread, the fifth game in what is commonly referred to as the “2D series. Metroid “.
Here’s a look at how the story unfolds throughout each game in the 2D series. Can you figure out how some of their secrets can connect to Metroid Dread?

Introducing Bounty Hunter Samus Aran
The species Metroid, an unknown floating life form, is discovered on the planet SR388 by the Galactic Federation. Space pirates, based on the planet Zebes, steal Metroids from Federation researchers and plot to harness the power of these mysterious creatures.
To stop the space pirates, the Galactic Federation turns to the most powerful bounty hunter in the galaxy: Samus Aran.
Samus lands on the planet Zebes and successfully destroys the underground fortress of the space pirates, with their brains, the organic supercomputer Mother Brain.
GOOD TO KNOW: THE BEGINNING OF THE END (ALTERNATIVE)
Metroid’s end screen changes based on your completion time. By playing over and over again, you can find out how to complete the game faster and see other versions of the end screen. You can find similar alternate takes on the end screen throughout the series.
Metroid Dread Development Team – This very first game marks the beginning of the bizarre and interconnected destinies of Samus and the Metroid, a story arc that reaches its conclusion in Metroid Dread. This game set the series’ signature mold: exploring maze-like areas and using weapon and ability upgrades to reach new locations. It also set the universe and tone while introducing iconic music and sound effects.
By the way, the word “Metroid” comes from the combination of “metro” (in the sense of underground transportation system) with “android” (a humanoid robot).
The original Metroid game was remade in 2004 as Metroid: Zero Mission for the Game Boy Advance ™ system. This remake added a stealth part where Samus is without his Power Suit and must move forward while remaining hidden from the Space Pirates in order to survive. We think you can feel a connection between this section of the game and Metroid Dread.

An emergency mission to exterminate the Metroid
The Galactic Federation takes the incident with the space pirates on planet Zebes very seriously. They send a research vessel to the planet SR388 to confirm the existence of the Metroid. However, the ship disappears.
A rescue unit is sent to SR388, but contact is also lost with them. The Federation concludes that the Metroid underground creatures are responsible. Samus is called again, this time to exterminate the Metroid threat on SR388.
After many deadly battles with the Metroid in their various evolutionary forms, Samus confronts and defeats the Queen Metroid, marking the successful end of the mission. Unexpectedly, a newborn Metroid hatches in front of Samus – as she is the first creature he sees, the larva imprints itself on Samus and believes she is his mother. Samus can’t bring herself to kill the newborn, so she brings it back to the Galactic Federation Academy of Space Sciences for study.
GOOD TO KNOW: CHOZO MEMORIES
It is believed that the Chozo once lived on SR388, and the remains of their civilization, including the high-tech machines and weapons they developed, can be found all over the planet.
In the Metroid: Samus Returns game for the Nintendo 3DS ™ family of consoles, a remake of Metroid II: Return of Samus, players can unlock secret clues surrounding the fate of the Chozo on the planet SR388.
Metroid Dread Development Team – The games Metroid II: Return of Samus and Metroid: Samus Returns describe the first meeting between Samus and the newborn Metroid. These chapters also include descriptions of the Chozo civilization, which makes them fundamental to the overall history of the Metroid 2D series.

Desperate times, desperate measures
The heavily damaged Space Pirate fortress on planet Zebes was gradually rebuilt by the survivors of Samus’ previous strike. Ridley, the supreme commander of the space pirates, attacks the Academy of Space Sciences and steals the newborn – known to be the last living Metroid in the universe – to pursue the space pirates’ goal of ‘arm the species.
Samus returns to the planet Zebes to retrieve the Metroid and stop the sinister plans of the space pirates. However, in a fierce final battle with the monstrous Mother Brain, the newborn baby sacrifices himself to save Samus. After the defeat of Mother Brain, Samus narrowly escapes a self-destructive planet Zebes. The space pirates are wiped out in the explosion.
GOOD TO KNOW: NUMBER ENTRIES
The Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion games do not have numbers in their titles, but the opening video for each game qualifies them as “METROID 3” and “METROID 4” respectively.
Likewise, you can find “METROID 5” at the start of the Metroid Dread game trailer.
Metroid Dread Development Team – Arguably the Super Metroid game offers the most exploration flexibility in the series. Game Boy Advance (2002)
Parasite X attack
Samus is hired by the biotechnology company Biologic Space Laboratories (BSL) to protect a field research unit on the planet SR388.
The surface searches go well until Samus is exposed and attacked by Parasite X, a life form capable of mimicking organic creatures in their entirety. The parasite puts Samus in critical condition and renders her unconscious. All hope seems lost as the X rapidly multiplies and erodes his body.
Scientists determine that a vaccine made from a cell culture from newborn Metroid is Samus’ only chance of survival. She miraculously escapes death and at the same time becomes the only living creature immune to the X parasite.
On board the BSL station orbiting SR388, Samus engages in a fierce battle with the SA-X – a knockoff of Samus in his full-power Power Suit – and succeeds in eliminating Parasite X, destroying the station in the process. and the planet SR388.
GOOD TO KNOW: GAMEPLAY IMPROVEMENTS
In the Metroid Fusion game, the streamlined controls, such as weapon switching and diagonal fire, help evolve the gameplay to be much smoother than in previous games. Samus also has more moves at his disposal than ever before, like grabbing ledges.
Metroid Dread Development Team – The SA-X is a huge threat that Samus encounters on several occasions during the Metroid Fusion game.
