As Dustin points out depressing in this morning Covid-19 rally, things are not going very well. Covid-19 infections are exploding. Dangerous variations that we cannot predict are spreading. Ron DeSantis is days away from suggesting that children with Covid-19 drink red tide seawater as a remedy. My patience with anti-vaccines hangs by a thread no thicker than a pubis. For god’s sake, I agree with Bill Kristol.

But in the news that lowers my blood pressure, Yelp has made some smart improvements to its database. Business owners can now select two additional free attributes: “Proof of Immunization Required” and “All Staff Fully Immunized. The changes were announced yesterday.

“But James,” you say, “Sometimes people act like assholes. What’s Stopping Anti-Vaxxer Assholes From Flooding Theaters, Restaurants, And Stores Responsible For Hateful One-Star Reviews On Their Right To Infect Your Grandma With A Potentially Deadly Virus ? ”

First of all, it’s a little weird that you are talking to your computer. Second, Yelp is on it. As described in yesterday’s press release, the company is implementing the same measures as it does to protect companies from hate speech.

For businesses that enable “Proof of Vaccination Required” and “All Staff Fully Immunized” on their Yelp page, we are putting safeguards in place to proactively protect them from reviews that are primarily critical of health and safety measures. COVID security they enforce. We implemented a similar system when we launched our Black Owned Attribute in June 2020, and followed the same process for our other Identity Attributes, such as Latinx, Asians, and LGBTQ. By proactively monitoring business pages that have these identity attributes enabled for any hateful, racist, or other content that violates our Content Guidelines, we thwarted and removed nearly 400 harmful content reviews.

I’m sure a lot of the trash will still go through, at least temporarily, but I appreciate that Yelp is making the effort. We’ve all seen stories of the terrible abuse that restaurant and supermarket staff already face as customers, Tiger-blooded Charlie Sheen goes into howler monkey screams whenever he has to hide . Maybe, hopefully, Pestilence and Typhoid Mary will scroll Yelp on their spit-streaked smartphones and find a less discriminating place for Date Night.
