It's not very common to see Sidney Crosby mix the game with punches, but Thursday's Sharks-Penguins match offered all that.
Things were terribly trying in the third period of this competition when both teams engaged in some sort of online brawl during a break between two games. As the two teams met on their respective benches, Evander Kane of San Jose had a very tough match with a Pittsburgh player, and then other players followed.
The situation degenerated quite quickly and the focus was mainly on Crosby, who was involved in an altercation with Sharks defender Brenden Dillon. Crosby seemed to disagree with Dillon's firing on Pittsburgh defenseman Marcus Pettersson and he responded with a few shots (gloved) to Dillon.
Crosby continued to shoot as players crowded around them, hitting Dillon's face with a few gloved gloves while he was restrained. Micheal Haley of San Jose, who was acquired Wednesday by the team during waivers, tried to defend Dillon and fight Crosby. The captain of the Penguins did not seem particularly interested in this idea because he had quickly fallen on the ice.
In the end, chaos resulted in over 50 penalty minutes, including fouls for Crosby, Dillon, Pettersson and Haley. Penguins coach Mike Sullivan was also ejected from the match after arguing with the officials about their incident management.
After the match, Kane revealed that all of this had been triggered when he had tried to take a look at the Penguins' white board as they laid out a strategy on the bench.
"I was right there, staring at their bench, staring at their board that they were using and one of their players, not really sure who it was, jumped and got tried to do something about it and the problem is getting worse, "says Kane.
Unfortunately for the Penguins, that's about as much fight as they put in all night. The Sharks left the PPG Paints Arena with a 4-0 win.
