Power Rankings: Wyndham Championship

Rickie Fowler, Tommy Fleetwood, Lucas Glover, Francesco Molinari, Barracuda Championship winner Erik van Rooyen and defending champion Jim Herman will be among the notables reviewed in Tuesday’s Fantasy Insider.

The Wyndham Championship has served as the regular season anchor of the PGA TOUR throughout the FedExCup era and Sedgefield CC has been hosting it since 2008. Because the status of golfers will be subject to change at its conclusion, the rally in Greensboro feels like the last day of high school. Some guys will never see each other again, because even a reunion should be earned.

For the most part, this will precede a revival that will result in a FedExCup race in all three bridge playoffs, the Korn Ferry Tour finals being contested simultaneously, or perhaps a place in the second stage of the qualifying school to regain status on the KFT in 2022. The churn rate is the norm in the constant of meritocracy.

Leading qualifying for the Playoffs is the Top 10 Comcast Business Tour. Of the 25 mathematically within reach of being rewarded, four are on the field at Sedgefield – Louis Oosthuizen (eighth in FedExCup points), Jason Kokrak (12th), Hideki Matsuyama (14th) and Patrick Reed (22nd). Among them, only Oosthuizen can stretch to number 1. He cannot finish lower than 10th.

Another hard-hitting bubble hovers over Bo Hoag in 125th place in points. From Sepp Straka in the 105th through Rafael Campos in the 151st, only Charles Howell III (137th) is not engaged at Sedgefield. (CH3 is totally exempt until the 2021-22 season, so it only loses the chance to qualify for the 2021 Playoffs).

Sedgefield is a par 70 stock measuring 7,131 yards. Without significant changes and with usually favorable scoring conditions, it will play the role of a race track with which the participants are familiar. Last year’s scoring average of 68.779 matches its recent history.

Bermuda’s greens are set to touch 12 feet on the Stimpmeter, but the daily threat of rain and increased risk of storms deeper into the tournament could have an impact on that. The two and a half inch primary rough will be consistent. Wind won’t be a factor, so any daytime peaks in the 90s will be felt before a relative cooling on Sunday.

On his way to the title last year, Jim Herman introduced the manual’s formula for success in a shootout. He led the field in touchdown greens (63 of 72) and was third in Strokes Gained: Putting, connecting on 14 10-foot away tries, tied for most on the field. He went 10 for 21 from 10 to 20 feet and placed second in average distance in pierced putts.

Since the Wyndham Championship is the last stop before the playoffs, all top 10s at Sedgefield will be eligible to compete in the Fortinet Championship from September 16-19.
