Katie was on her last two men in Monday’s final of The bachelorette – but would she even stick around to pick one?
Last week, she was in tears and ready to quit the show after she failed to reassure the favorite Greg that he needed, which caused him to quit her. And as the (dramatic!) Finale (three hours!) Opens, we get a glimpse of Katie calling Greg “a liar” on After the final rose and accusing him of “using it” for “theater training” – so no, I don’t think they are helping it! After a pointless and time-consuming season recap, we return to Katie crying behind that bathroom door and talking about how ‘heartbreaking’ Greg’s exit has been.
Suddenly she does a live interview with Tayshia and Kaitlyn and rehashes Greg’s debacle, saying it made her think she never really knew him at all: “I’m literally on my knees begging this man to stay, and he tells me, that’s not good enough. (Um, did that happen? Because if it did, we didn’t see it.) Katie also reveals that she didn’t. haven’t spoken to Greg since that day and remembers the way he “spoke aloud” to him: “He’s not a man.” Oh, Greg, I already feel that this evening is not going to end well for you…
Back in New Mexico, Katie is catatonic in bed, still reeling from Gregxit. She decides that she needs “someone who will trust her”, but she is not sure that she can go ahead and give Blake and Justin a real chance. Speaking of these two, they receive a visit from Tayshia and Kaitlyn, who tell them that Greg is gone and that Katie is “emotionally devastated”. (Don’t be offended, however.) But their journeys will continue! Yay…? Katie meets Blake on an overnight date, and they unleash a water balloon fight – but there’s a big old elephant in the room that needs to be tackled. She tells Blake the whole saga, including Michael’s departure, and admits that she wanted to quit after Greg left. But she wants to continue! He responds by saying “That’s a lot!” then kiss quickly with her. He still has serious doubts.
On their dinner date, Blake gives a big, long-winded speech that boils down to this: he loves her. (This guy who is now in his third Bachelorette party isn’t ‘playing with love’, you see.) She wanted to wait until the end to say those words … but she goes ahead and says to him anyway: you so much. ”(Oh! So now she can say it!) They feed each other cheesecake in the fantasy sequel as Katie gushes out,“ I haven’t felt this happy in a long time. ”Since Greg left. , you mean? “What a turn of events!” Kaitlyn exclaims as we return to the live show. “Uh, yeah, I would say yes!
Katie and Blake wake up in bed together in the fantasy suite and look askance at each other. “We want to leave together at the end of this,” Katie announces. She also confesses to Kaitlyn that she was “very satisfied … many times” that night. She fell in love with Blake the moment she told him about her grief over Greg and he still wanted to keep going, she adds: “It was the happiest day of my life.” Oh yeah, she still has a date with Justin to go. The poor guy is distraught as he prepares for their date, and it’s a bad sign when Katie doesn’t jump in his arms when he arrives and then adds the dreaded “Can we talk?” She sits him down and tells him how brutal Greg’s departure has been for her. She says she was delighted to have a date with him, but then adds, “However…”
She tells him that during her date with Blake, she told him that she was “falling in love with him” – which is not even true! She said she loved him so much! She can’t go all the way with Justin to meet her family at this point, she says. Justin chokes a bit and regrets opening his heart to her the way he did: “It’s not a fun place to be.” She reassures him by telling him that he’s a great guy who will make a good husband one day… but not his! They kiss her and she puts him in an SUV from there. Justin explains everything for Tayshia and Kaitlyn on the live show ahead of a reunion with Katie, and he seems like a pretty nice guy – but come on, let’s be honest. These two had no connection all season. And now we get a montage of Justin’s wacky reaction photos? Let’s come to the good stuff, which is the Greg stuff.
First off, Blake has to meet Katie’s family… but there’s no tension, because he’s the only guy left! He meets his mother and aunt Lindsey, who is “not at all affectionate … almost cold,” warns Katie. Lindsey is skeptical (understandably!) (Come on, Lindsey!) She and Katie’s mom both punched big holes in all of Blake’s repeated responses, and Katie hits an odd note when she says it will be. great when they’re apart for a month while Blake is in Africa for work (?). Plus, Blake doesn’t seem in a rush to get engaged? But Katie’s mom sees that they’re happy together and decides that’s all that matters in the end.
On their last date, Katie and Blake join energy healer Felicia to write down all their fears and insecurities and cram them into a giant vampire statue before setting it on fire to let them all go. They read their fears aloud to each other, then put them in a box and burn them as Katie proclaims that Blake is her “soul mate”: “I can’t imagine my life without him.” Eh? Ah good? After begging another man to stay, like, less than 48 hours ago? Sorry, but it all just seems very forced. I’m not buying it, Katie! Blake also looks legitimately panicked while browsing engagement rings with Tayshia, fearing that he will feel “uncertain” and “uncomfortable”. He looks like he had eaten a bad oyster and walks away alone for a moment. Not a good sign!
As Katie heads to the final rose ceremony, she has “no doubt” that she is getting engaged to Blake. Meanwhile, Tayshia tells Blake if he’s not sure to propose, “You have to let her go.” Uh-oh. Blake shows up at the ceremony and admits to Tayshia and Kaitlyn that he is “freaking out”, but he gets involved anyway. He holds Katie’s hands as she shares how much she loves him, “You made me the happiest woman in the world.” He stumbles into his speech and scares her a little, saying, “I can’t give you what you came here for… because you deserve so much more than that.” Oh, delicate! He kneels down and asks the question – and she says yes! She gives him the last rose, and Tayshia and Kaitlyn rush over to congratulate the happy couple before saddling a pair of horses and setting off for sunset.
Let’s go back to the live show, where we sort out some “unfinished business” with Greg. He reiterates to Tayshia and Kaitlyn that “I was giving him all that I am” and feels like he didn’t get anything from Katie. Yet he has no regrets. Katie comes out and walks past him without a hug, or even a glance. Ouch. She doesn’t think he ever wanted to get engaged and claims she gave him a lot of validation. She now feels like he was just looking for “the perfect escape opportunity” and using it to get “acting practice at my expense”. Katie explains that Greg went to acting school, so she can’t really figure out who he is. Bad news for all involved! You can’t trust!
“You’re a liar,” Katie adds, “and if you think it’s love, you don’t know what love is.” She says he’s been “rude” and “gas-lit” her and just dumps on him, and he can only mumble an apology before it builds up more and more. (When Kaitlyn interrupts him for a commercial break, Katie says, “Please take it!”) He retorts that he felt like she was “playing the Bachelorette role with me” and Hid her emotions from him, but she still thinks he’s not being honest: “If you really loved me, this moment wouldn’t have pushed you away.” He gets some support from the crowd when he says, “I took my heart out of you… and all I got was just a pat on the back.” His response is icy: “When he left, everything I felt for him did the same.” Greg tries to wish her good luck, and she responds with the least convincing line of “I wish you all the best” ever captured on film.
Blake comes out, and wow they’re so happy and in love, you guys! Katie never told her family that she was going to get engaged, so they’re only finding out now. (Surprise, Aunt Lindsey!) Blake says their relationship “got out of hand … in the best possible way.” They remember his false proposition, and Katie laughs that Blake is such a “prankster.” She’s glad he panicked so much… because it shows how seriously he took her! (Side note: how strange is it that Tayshia is doing this interview, when Blake was chasing her less than a year ago?) Their interview ends with a bunch of dudes in the audience wielding boomboxes and playing this country song “Memorize You” they’ve danced before, and Katie bursts into tears as they share another slow dance. Then it all ends with a Baccalaureate in paradise promo… because Bachelor Nation continues, no matter what!
