In last week’s episode of The Chrome Cast, we spent a good deal of our time discussing ASUS’s new family of Chromebooks. The PC maker has ditched three new 11th Gen Tiger Lake devices that got us very excited about the future of Chrome OS flagships and there’s plenty to be excited about. For starters, ASUS seems to have stepped up its game in the area of design and build quality with devices that not only look great, but also have a build quality that’s as high-end as anything on the market. These changes are subtle but tighter tolerances, better materials, and a unique aesthetic that have taken ASUS Chrome OS devices to the top of the barrel.
Second and just as important, ASUS has finally determined the pricing and pricing of the new CX premium Chromebook line is set to put pressure on other Chromebook makers. The 15.6-inch ASUS Chromebook CX5 is a prime example. The 11th-gen Core i3 convertible has 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, backlit keys and a very good display. The overall hardware experience is excellent. The power of Intel’s Tiger Lake processor combined with the premium build quality of the CX5 guarantees a hefty price tag, but ASUS is selling the 2-in-1 for just $ 569 and on good days you can grab it for $ 100. less. (Today is a good day, BTW.) You could spend double that and get a Chromebook that isn’t as powerful or well designed. Well done, ASUS.

At the north end of ASUS ‘new lineup, you have the ultra-premium Chromebook CX9 and the previously unannounced Chromebook Flip CX5400. The former is a flip-flop with just about all the bells and whistles you can imagine and the specs that currently make it the most powerful Chromebook ever made and the top-tier Core i7 version costs just $ 1,149. The latter has just appeared one day and seems to be the true successor to the Chromebook Flip C436 from ASUS. It features a 14-inch FullHD display, convertible form factor, and retractable USI stylus. The Flip CX5400 eliminates the fingerprint sensor found on the CX9, but you get pretty much everything Chrome OS has to offer. The Core i7, 16GB / 512GB version will retail for $ 1,049 when ASUS makes it available, but a slightly lower version has just appeared on Amazon and is on pre-order as we speak.
This model is probably more in line with what most consumers are looking for in a Chromebook. The 11th gen Core i3 has proven to be a powerful workhorse capable of handling just about any task with ease, including running Linux packages. This model still includes the in-garage stylus, backlit keys, and premium build quality found on the more expensive model. The 8GB of RAM combined with the Core i3 will ensure enough power for most users and 128GB of storage means you won’t have to worry about running out of space if you’re not living your life in the cloud.
The model sells for $ 699, which is a very acceptable price for a high-end and powerful flagship Chromebook. Amazon is currently taking preorders, with the earliest shipping date being September 4. This leads me to believe that this will likely be the official release date for the CX5400. Here’s a breakdown of the specs for ASUS ‘latest convertible flagship and you can find the pre-order list on The Chrome Shop at the link below. FYI: We have a review unit of this Chromebook in the office and Robby will be releasing the unboxing today.
