Catherine Zeta-Jones is about to get scary. The Oscar winner was recently cast as Morticia in the upcoming Wednesday Addams series on Netflix.
“Chicago” actress to star in eight-part series alongside the actors Jenna Ortega and Luis Guzman. Ortega will play Wednesday’s role and Guzmán will play Gomez Addams, Morticia’s husband.
The crime comedy will have a supernatural element, as viewers will follow Wednesday Addams’ school years as a student at Nevermore Academy. While attending class, she will have to learn to control her emerging psychic abilities, fight a massacre that terrorized the local town, and solve a mystery involving her parents 25 years ago, all while navigating her relationships.
The series is being written by “Smallville” creators Al Gough and Miles Millar and will be directed by king of gothic fantasy Tim Burton. Other iconic actresses who have taken Morticia’s place include Anjelica Huston, Charlize Theron, Daryl Hannah and Carolyn Jones.
Huston portrayed the character in the 1991 film “The Addams Family” alongside Raul Julia as Gomez Addams and Christopher Lloyd as Uncle Fester. Theron starred in the most recent adaptation of the 1960s cartoon when she lent her voice for the 2019 animated film of the same name.
Zeta-Jones’ previous television projects include “Queen: Bette and Joan”, “Queen America” and “Prodigal Son”.
She plays the role of the psychiatrist in Fox’s “Prodigal Son” and recently spoke about her Welsh colleague Michael Sheen on the series. “I always wanted to share the limelight with my neighbor from Wales. We had never met, but working with him was on my to-do list,” she said.
“I didn’t have 90 minutes of screen time in this area. I had seven lines here, eight there, an excerpt, look, a reaction. But I’m like Sugar Ray Leonard in the ring. I can always bend down and dive. I have too much OCD to do anything that I didn’t know the beginning, middle and end of – so this one was different, ”Zeta-Jones added.
