A week ago today, John Stivers and his family were getting ready for a camping trip to Tahoe. But when the beloved campsite owner disappeared while shopping, his family have instead spent every day since his search, along with friends, and pleading for his safe return.
“John is one of the nicest and most loving people in the world,” his wife, 17, Michele told Dateline. “No matter how busy he is, he will always stop to help someone else.”
The 52-year-old husband and father of a 14-year-old daughter was last seen at the family home in Copperopolis, Calif. On August 2, 2021. Michele said she made lunch for everyone as they talked about their plans for the day and their next camping trip – a trip, Michele added, was her husband’s idea.
The couple own the Tulloch Lake Campground and Marina in nearby Jamestown, California. After lunch, John informed Michele of his intention to stop by the bank in Sonora, Calif. And then work at the campsite before heading home for the evening.
At around 2 p.m. that day, Michele said she got a call from John.
“He called and told me about a golf cart left at the clubhouse and then said he was going to bring the camper home that evening for our camping trip,” Michele said. . “And that was the last time I spoke to him.”
When John didn’t get home that night, Michele started to worry. She told Dateline that she knew he had gone to the bank to deposit money for the business, but after calling the campsite and speaking with the employees, she realized that he had never shown up for work.
At 9:30 p.m., Michele said she called and texted her cell phone several times, but it was left off. She then called the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office and reported her missing.
That same evening, Sheriff’s Deputies located John’s white Chevrolet Express 15-passenger van parked along Campo Seco Road in Jamestown, according to a statement released by the Sheriff’s Office the next day, but John was not with the vehicle. The area where the van was found was on a road that John could have taken to get to the campground from the Bank of Sonora.
In the days following John’s disappearance, several searches were carried out in the surrounding area, both by law enforcement and community volunteers. A “Find John Stivers” Facebook group has been established to track research and provide updates. The page reached nearly 2,000 members in one week.
“I can’t think of anyone who doesn’t like John,” his wife Michele told Dateline. “I don’t think of anyone who would want to hurt him.”
She added that she knew without a doubt that her husband would never stray away from his family, his campsite or even his van.
“It just doesn’t make sense,” she said. “None of this makes sense.”
As the tight-knit community continues to research, post flyers, and share updates on social media, Michele told Dateline she thinks someone needs to know something about what happened. to her husband that day.
“There is a time frame that is not taken into account,” she said. “Between his call to me and his found car. It was mid-afternoon – someone must have seen something. This is what I am looking for. Someone who has seen something and will come forward – and the information will lead us to John. We just need him home safe.
The Stivers family are offering a reward of $ 10,000 for information that leads to John’s whereabouts.
John is described as being 6’2 ” tall and weighing approximately 215 lbs. He has salt and pepper hair and hazel eyes. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a wide-brimmed bob.
Anyone with information on John’s whereabouts is urged to call the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office at 209-694-2900 or email advice to [email protected].
