When there was a delay in the Celtics’ trade that sent Tristan Thompson to Sacramento, there seemed to be behind-the-scenes reasons. Boston was looking for another business partner for its recently acquired pieces from the Hawks to Kris Dunn and Bruno Fernando.
The Celtics ultimately couldn’t find a match, making the trade official and having Dunn and Fernando on the roster. Fernando, a 6-foot-9 center, has been added to the Boston Summer League roster which now includes five players with previous NBA experience.
While the Cs couldn’t initially find a business partner, they’re still on the lookout for potential deals, according to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report. The Celtics currently have no place in the roster and are wooing Dennis Schroder, which means they will likely have to make room eventually. A trade would potentially free up ceiling space while also opening up a place.
Dunn, 27, is getting older after being No. 5 overall in the 2016 NBA Draft. While he may be part of the Boston squad as a potential defensive weapon, he has recently experienced a bad patch in his career. Dunn only played four games for the Hawks last season after leg surgery left him sidelined for extended periods. His attacking game is not refined because the C seeks to potentially move him.
Fernando’s place on the list is still pending due to recent signings. The Celtics already had two crosses with Robert Williams III and Al Horford, then they went ahead and signed a contract with Enes Kanter to bring that number to three. The Cs could wear four crosses if they rolled with the double roster again, but having Fernando on the roster could be too much body in position.
The Celtics haven’t made much noise in the free agency market, instead relying on exchanges to reshape the roster as President Brad Stevens hears it. He’s already had notable trades between Kemba Walker in Oklahoma City and the acquisition of Josh Richardson from the Mavs. If the Cs are vying for Schroder’s services, then a subsequent exchange would make sense.
