The grass is not always greener elsewhere.
Free agent playmaker Dennis Schroder is apparently struggling with the fallout from his decision to turn down the $ 84 million extension the Lakers offered him in March.
“I think he’s in shock because of what he did,” a source told Mark Murphy of the Boston Herald of how Schroder feels months after his choice.
The 27-year-old transferred to Los Angeles from Oklahoma City last offseason. He excelled in his starting role with the Lakers and worked well alongside veterans LeBron James and Anthony Davis. However, Schroder thought he could close a bigger deal.
When the free agency window opened on August 2, the teams didn’t turn to Schroder as expected – and the Lakers wasted no time trading for Wizards point guard Russell Westbrook, as well as a host of veteran stars, closing the door on a possible return of Schröder.
While the market for starting pointers is slim, the 6-foot-3 Schroder could find a temporary home in Boston, following Kemba Walker’s departure for the Knicks.
“The Celtics have pitched Schroder the idea of supporting Marcus Smart next season,” but “he needs time” following the “shock” of his fallout with the Lakers, according to the Boston Herald.
Tuesday, the NBA reporter Jordan Schultz reported that Boston offered Schroder a one-year deal except for the middle-level taxpayer’s $ 5.9 million. However, Schroder would want the full MLE, which is $ 9.5 million, and a sophomore option. The Celtics don’t want to be in a rush to get past the cap, Schultz reported.
With the Lakers, Schroder averaged 15.4 points, 5.8 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game while shooting 43.7 percent from the field. He has become a solid two-way street player with playmaking abilities and could add depth to the Celtics alongside Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
The caveat with Boston acquiring Schroder is his desire to be a starting point guard. If he’s brought behind Smart, it’s possible he’ll run into some chemistry and relationship issues in Boston – something the team have dealt with as point guard since Kyrie Irving’s move to the Celtics.
After two impressive years off the bench at Oklahoma City, Schroder rejected the idea of a bench role when he joined the Lakers.
“I’ve done this on the bench for the last two years at OKC. I think with LeBron and AD I can be useful as a starter in the PG position,” he said in December. 2020.
