The move represents a blow to a nationwide Republicans effort to tighten restrictions on mail and mail ballots after the 2020 presidential election.

The governor vetoed six bills in total.

“I just vetoed several bills that would have made it more difficult for Wisconsinians to vote,” Evers announced on Twitter.

“Over the past two years we have seen Republicans across the country adding more voting barriers and abusing their power to try to change election results they didn’t like. This is unacceptable. Politicians don’t decide elections – that power stays with the people, ”he continued.

A second bill would have banned election officials from filling in missing information on envelopes provided by voters who voted by mail.

Another bill would have prevented what Republicans have called the “ballot harvest” and would have banned the collection of mail-in ballots more than two weeks from the election date.

The news of vetoes in the Midwestern Battlefield State comes amid an effort by Republicans-led legislatures in Arizona, Georgia, Texas and other states to pass bills on elections which would make postal voting more difficult.

The Wisconsin legislature does not have enough votes to override the governor’s vetoes.

However, Republican state lawmakers in February approved a review of the 2020 elections by the non-partisan Legislative Audit Office that is expected to end this fall.

Vos also hired three retired police detectives to conduct a taxpayer-funded election review, noting that the audit would not be carried out by “computer scientists.”
