With all eyes eagerly awaiting the announcement of the iPhone 13 next month, DigiTimes is already previewing one of the features of the iPhone 2022, which could introduce a new 3nm chip.
Apple is already using the smallest chip on the market with a 5nm processor since the iPhone 12. While the iPhone 13 is expected to be the same size with a more efficient shape, a preview pays off a report of DigiTimes (Going through MacRumors) shows TSMC is preparing a new 3nm chip for iPhones and Macs 2022:
“TSMC is on track to scale its 3nm processing technology to volume production in the second half of 2022 for Apple devices, whether they are iPhones or Mac computers, according to industry sources.“
This snapshot corroborates a June story that TSMC expects to be ready for volume production of 3nm chips by the second half of 2022.
“TSMC is rapidly advancing its manufacturing processes and is expected to move its production N4, namely 4nm, node at risk in the third quarter of 2021, with N3 – 3nm node – to start volume production at the world’s first pure- play at the foundry in the second half of 2022.
While this looks promising, in a report by Nikkei Last month, the post says the first 3nm Apple chip will likely arrive in an iPad (presumably a Pro model), while the iPhone 14 will use a larger 4nm SoC due to rate of return / planning times .
4nm for the iPhone 2022 has already been reported by Trend force last year and DigiTimes in March.
The size of the manufacturing process roughly measures the distance between transistors on a chip. As the size of the process decreases, the gaps between the transistors are reduced. This usually results in a more energy efficient and performant design.
For now, rumors about the upcoming iPhone 14 already give a glimpse of what to expect: a port-less iPhone, an under-display Touch ID, no mini-model, and a notch-less design.
