The second day of preliminary hearings for Barry Morphew’s murder trial began on Tuesday, detailing text messages missing Colorado mother Suzanne Morphew exchanged with her husband and a lifelong lover just days before her disappearance on the day. of Mother’s Day in 2020.
Suzanne Morphew was reported missing on May 10, 2020. Investigators assume she is dead, but no human remains have been found.
Testimony from the Chaffee County Courthouse on Tuesday also revealed Barry Morphew turned his phone on and off in airplane mode early on Mother’s Day morning – as he made several stops to throw out the trash and check into a Holiday Inn Express in Bloomington, Colorado. .
Google data uncovered by investigators showed Barry also showed up for a job for Garrett Construction and completed around 15 minutes of work, removing blocks from a retaining wall before leaving. He came to the site knowing that construction could not be legally completed on a Sunday in the town of Bloomington, said former FBI agent Johnny Grusing, the third witness called so far.
The FBI also obtained surveillance footage showing Barry carrying several bags in the motel’s dumpsters. He also stopped to throw trash at a men’s warehouse and a bus stop. When questioned by investigators, Barry said he threw away tranquilizer material. He admitted that he had guns for hunting.

At 6:10 a.m. on the morning of his wife’s disappearance, Barry also texted her.
“Are you getting up? Happy Mother’s Day. I love you,” Barry wrote. He also texted his own mother.
Suzanne’s abandoned ATV will be found later today by deputies not far from her home.
In shocking testimony Monday, investigators revealed she had an almost two-year affair with a man named Jeff Libler. The two had gone to high school together in Indiana. Libler’s cell phone was ringing on the Michigan towers the same day Suzanne went missing.
FBI agent Kenneth Harris said on Tuesday that Libler told investigators he was working on a dock project during Suzanne’s disappearance, and credit card records corroborated these claims, showing he bought supplies at a Michigan hardware store during this time.
Libler also texted Suzanne to wish her a Happy Mother’s Day, acknowledging in the post that the holidays could be difficult for her after losing her own mother. He sent another message on May 11, 2021, a day after Suzanne went missing, wishing her good luck with an appointment she had for cancer treatment. It was their last known correspondence.
Harris described Libler as the opposite of Barry, as he often inundated Suzanne with compliments.
Before disappearing, Suzanne had used the help of a voice-activated spy pen to find out if Barry was cheating on her, but investigators said there was no evidence to suggest an extramarital affair on her part. Investigators also don’t believe Barry was aware of his wife’s affair with Libler – although Suzanne’s friend Holly Wilson told investigators Barry had accused his wife of cheating in the past.

“I’m done. I don’t care what you’ve been doing for years. We have to understand this civilly,” Suzanne wrote in a text message to Barry on May 6, 2020, days before she disappeared.
“I promise you that you are wrong about all the crazy thoughts about me,” Barry replied to his wife. “Why would I want another one, only a fool would walk away from an angel like you.”
Suzanne and Libler’s relationship had spanned across the United States, as the two had previously met in New Orleans in February 2019, Indiana in April 2019, and Michigan in October 2019. two cut off their relationship before Christmas, after Libler’s daughter found out about the affair and told an uncle and his older brothers about it. Suzanne and Libler then resumed communication.
Suzanne’s iCloud account discovered on December 27, 2019 that she was researching language schools in Ecuador after Libler allegedly told her the country was a cheap place to live and with good health care.
Harris, the FBI agent, said Libler was the one who got Suzanne mountain biking and drinking IPA. The two have described each other as soul mates, Harris said. Barry Morphew’s defense attorney Iris Eytan asked if the two had exchanged nude photographs, and Harris replied that the couple had.
They met again in Florida in February 2020. Libler had planned a trip to Colorado in March 2020, but travel restrictions imposed at the start of the coronavirus pandemic prevented him from coming to visit him. The man she had had an affair with for two years did not contact authorities after Suzanne went missing, but spoke to investigators once they identified who he was, investigators said.
“If he had known about me, he would have come after me,” Libler reportedly told authorities, referring to Barry. “I just don’t think he knew Suzanne and I were together.”
