Kyle Larson on Christopher Bell: “He doesn’t want to talk to me”

There appears to be no water under the bridge between Christopher Bell and Kyle Larson after Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Watkins Glen International.

Bell and Larson got tangled up in the final stage when Larson attempted to pass Bell for second place on Turn 1 when the two cars made contact, sending Bell’s No.20 Toyota Joe Gibbs Racing, exit the running surface. Larson won his fifth race of the 2021 season, while Bell recovered for a seventh place.

REAR DRIVERS: Who’s to blame for the Bell-Larson incident?

Bell expressed his displeasure with Larson after Sunday’s race: “I didn’t see him, so I don’t know if I filled him (Larson), but he shouldn’t have been there in the first place. He didn’t really get a point at the end of (turn) seven. We were all blown away.

On Tuesday night, Larson made an appearance on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio to share his side of the story after reviewing the incident and detailed his take on the No.5 Chevy Hendrick Motorsports.

“At first I thought I was completely wrong,” Larson said. “But honestly, I think after watching the replay I think we both had a factor in what happened. I got in there, I didn’t dive bomb like he said. I was half a car back on him going down the front stretch, looked inside him throughout the braking zone and was actually further forward than I was in. reality. I locked the brakes late in the braking zone when I realized he was going to turn in the turn, and I really turned like I wasn’t there.

“I don’t know if his watcher just didn’t tell him or what happened there, but, anyway, I still feel bad about it. I never want to spin anyone, especially Christopher Bell. I have a lot of respect for him on the racetrack and we had some amazing races together. Obviously he’s upset, and I understand. But after watching more reruns I don’t think I was completely wrong.

Larson, who apologized to Bell in his initial on-air victory interview, said he also tried to contact Bell to discuss the issue, but was unsuccessful.

“I reached out and tried, but I guess he’s not willing to talk to me, which is a bit of rubbish,” Larson said. “I think any adult out there would at least have a conversation with you, but they don’t care. So we’ll move on and if he wants to get me back, that’s okay. No matter. I won’t worry about it. If it makes him sleep better at night ignoring me and wanting to screw me up or whatever, so be it.
