Brian Stelter stopped The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Tuesday night and the timing couldn’t have been much worse for the CNN internal media reporter.
The appearance came on the same day New York Governor Andrew Cuomo finally resigned his post following a damning investigation outlining the numerous allegations of sexual harassment against him. So naturally, Colbert asked Stelter to weigh in on CNN’s drama about anchor Chris Cuomo’s role as informal adviser to his older brother. “Behind closed doors are people mad at him? Colbert wanted to know. “Is he in trouble? “
“Some people are mad at him,” Stelter said before giving a big show of confirmation of the latest report from The New York Times which indicates that Chris Cuomo was helping his brother write his post and advising him to quit as recently as the last few days. “I also have a source that says Chris was on the phone with his brother this week,” he said.
“Is your source Chris Cuomo?” Asked Colbert.
“He’s not,” Stelter replied. “You have to have limits. You have to draw a line.
“Why? He doesn’t! Colbert fired back.
“I think he actually does,” Stelter said as the live audience moaned in response.
When Colbert added incredulously: “Really? What are the limits ? Stelter then defended his network for essentially saying there was no reasonable expectation that the Cuomo brothers would not talk. The host was also pilloried this week for giving CNN what Washington post media critic Erik Wemple called a series of “wet kisses” on his Reliable sources show this last Sunday morning.
But as Colbert pointed out, Chris Cuomo “didn’t talk about his brother once the trouble started,” something Stelter said came straight from CNN management. “So why haven’t they governed this way when his brother was out pretty much every night during the COVID crisis?” asked Colbert. “It seems like a strange conflict of rules.”
Stelter would only say it’s “really complicated,” adding that there is “no page for this” situation in the “journalism ethics book” and that it is “definitely embarrassing” for CNN.
The same could be said for his sadly timed appearance on The late show.
