America has talent Season 16 kicked off its quarterfinals live on Tuesday (after a three-week hiatus while NBC broadcast the Summer Olympics), and near the peak of the two-hour episode, host Terry Crews reported. that while 36 acts generally go to EIGHT, this year, the judges could only agree on 35 – and therefore left it to viewers to select the final candidate, via a kind of special joker streaming on Peacock.
It wasn’t clear if this was in fact because Simon Cowell’s band Golden Buzzer, singer-songwriter Nightbirde, unfortunately had to give up at the last minute to focus on their battle with cancer. But of the five groups vying for that 36th place, three of them were remarkable singers in their own right, whom I had assumed all had a great chance to succeed – musician prodigy Dylan Zangwill, ex-Rock Star Supernova powerhouse Storm Large and crooner Matt Mauser (the father whose wife died in the Kobe Bryant helicopter crash) – as well as children’s magician Patrick Kun and daddy’s joke comedian Mike Goodwin .
Surprisingly, however, a competitor who do jump straight to live shows – and competed on Tuesday without having to languish in any Peacock purgatory like the arguably far more talented hopes mentioned above – was Sethward’s novelty act.
The costumed props comic Sethward had tried to EIGHT on several occasions before finally making it through this season on his fourth attempt – despite getting a red X from Simon before he even started – disguising himself as some sort of malfunctioning peacock. (Hey, whatever it takes to synergistically promote NBC’s sister streaming service, right?) This week he showed up (to the background music for Katy Perry’s “Peacock,” naturally) looking like to a peacock on steroids, with a ridiculous stage width wingspan. It then suffered a Spinal Tap type pyrotechnic malfunction and ignited, before rising from the ashes of the machinists’ fire extinguishers like a real phoenix.
It was slightly funny, if only for a few seconds – although Simon barely lasted that long, hitting his red X button in exasperation almost immediately. And while Sethward had vocal fans on Twitter, he certainly wasn’t a potentially million-dollar act more worthy of being in the top 36 than, say, Storm Large, which Simon had loved hearing from. Come on, do the judges really choose to let this bird’s brain pass?
“It’s amazing how he’s capable of doing nothing of so many things,” joked dazed and confused judge Howie Mandel, before blatantly adding: “For me, this is the ultimate promo for my documentary Start airing tonight on Peacock!
“I was laughing, but I don’t know what,” Heidi Klum said. “I’m so happy you finally got here, because it was your biggest dream. Now you’re here on the live show and I’m happy for you… but I didn’t get it.
Simon, of course, didn’t even pretend to be happy for Sethward, muttering, “It was absolutely, really horrible. We can now officially call the show America has no talent. “
Sethward isn’t discouraged though, proudly telling Terry, “Look, it’s really hard to get on stage. It takes a lot of courage. If I can do it, so can you!
Well I hope Dylan or Storm or Matt can get on the EIGHT scene finally. But when and if they do, they’ll face stiff competition this singing season, especially from this week’s pimp (and Judge Sofia Vergara’s Golden Buzzer pick) Jimmie Herrod. From the moment Jimmie started a cappella, this song stylist stunned with his clear and pure falsetto on the whimsical Willy wonka classic “Pure Imagination”. It was theater, and it was magic. Simon told Jimmie, “You’re one of those singers – unlike a lot of people in these shows that you forget the next day – that you will never forget this performance. You will never forget that voice. And I mean this as a compliment: you’re an artist that I see heading straight for Broadway.
So, on Wednesday’s live scores show, seven of this week’s twelve quarterfinals will advance to the semi-finals, and I think Jimmie is a shoo-in, while Sethward certainly isn’t. not. As for the other six contestants, I predict they will make it, they are daring stand-up comic Kabir Singh, animal actor Canine Stars, ballader Peter Rosalita, 10, eccentric singer-songwriter Madilyn Bailey. , daredevil escape artist Matt Johnson, and either harmony trio 1aChord or bluegrass / hip-hop group Gangsta Grass – while second-rate magician Dustin Tavella, dance company Beyond Belief directed by Alyssa Edwards and fellow actress Gina Brillin will likely return home.
See you then, when I hope the voting public is right and this series can be called again America has talent.
