Ryan Reynolds shocked by what Disney let him slip into Free Guy

He might just be a character, but it looks like Ryan Reynolds is still trying to do away with his cinematic overlords. As Deadpool, he threw punches at Fox, Disney, and Marvel – and often, especially in promotional material, the lines of what is said by Reynolds’ character and what is said by Reynolds himself can become a bit blurry. He seems to like it.

It hasn’t changed with free guy, Reynolds’ long-delayed new film which, according to our review, “is a Truman Show for the Fortnite age.” (You can read AA Dowd’s brilliant summary here.There is always a nod to what happens in the story, and given that the film is one of the last produced under the Fox banner as it was absorbed by Disney, that nod is sometimes directed towards the ridiculousness of corporate mergers.

We recently sat down with Reynolds for a video interview to talk about it. You can watch this directly below, or read the transcript provided, for those who are just not into the whole “watch moving pictures”.

The AV Club: This movie was supposed to come out right at the start of the pandemic and had a sort of ping-pong release day. We’ve been waiting for it for what feels like an eternity, and you’ve been producing content around it for what feels like an eternity. How does it feel to finally have him in the world?

Ryan Reynolds: You know, I think it’s right on time. It’s kinda weird how these things happen and you’re like “oh, no! When we first had to delay the movie, we were all living in this moment where you have no idea what to expect. Releasing movies was literally the last thing we had to worry about. So, for it to appear now, I’m pretty happy with it.

AVC: you manage to get an existing IP address in the movie, beyond what you created for free guy. Since you have time, have you made any adjustments? Did you have an additional phone call with Hugh Jackman to convince him to come aboard, Let’s say?

RR: We had no desire to change any frame of the film once it had been delayed. We were already locked up around that time, but all those Easter eggs, they were all there from the jump. Disney bought Fox, which served us with some pretty weird requests we made at Disney. For some weird and inexplicable reason to date, Disney has allowed us to do certain things and use Disney toys that we never thought they would have said yes or agreed to, but they did. So we don’t complain. For us it was really, really appealing, and especially doing it in the context of leaving the audience just overjoyed and letting the audience walk out of a movie theater with a big smile on their face without an ending. that says “Next movie, we’re going to answer such and such a question. It was just to give you everything you loved when you went to see Back to the future like a kid or something.

AVC: Speaking of children, what was the first video game you got really into? I thought I was the best Dr mario player in the world, for example.

RR: As a kid, we didn’t have video games at home. I would like us to do that. But I would go to my friend Mike Moody’s and play Mike Tyson’s punch, which I loved. I was walking through the park near my home in Vancouver, Canada, and going to this old video store called Pot Of Gold. In the back of that video store they had Double Dragon, and I’d spend all my money on the paper route plugging quarters into this game just to keep it going.
