Charlene Rodriguez, a family member, told the newspaper that the 2-year-old girl had suffered a concussion and had to have an operation on her leg, while her 3-year-old son had a torn liver. The 35-year-old husband and their 11-month-old child remained hospitalized. Police said the injuries were not life threatening.

Mendez was shot down with a stun gun after leaving the car with a knife, Haverstraw police said. He was arrested and charged with second degree murder and seven counts of attempted murder, WABC-TV reported. He pleaded not guilty to all charges when he appeared Wednesday night.

The court records show that Mendez, of Washingtonville, had a record of arrest in San Antonio, Texas, where he had recently lived. He had been charged with theft, drunk driving and domestic violence, the Times reported.

"Killer has killed my wife, the best friend of my wife and my six children, my world," wrote her husband on Facebook after the incident, referring to an article on the arrest of Mendez.

The DeLoatch family apparently lived in a family shelter and had just earned enough money to buy a new apartment and raise their seven future children.

"Her life was her children," Charlene Rodriguez told the post office. "It was a nightmare that the whole family would have woken up to."
