Training camp fights are common in the NFL, and coaches’ reactions to them can range from Dan Campbell blazing up with a fight at the Lions camp to Joe Judge becoming enraged after a fight at the Giants camp. . But Jets coach Robert Saleh has a different point of view.
Saleh said today that he was happy the Jets didn’t have any fights in his first training camp as a head coach, and he sees it as just a matter of mutual respect between the players.
“I think this team really cares about each other,” Saleh said. “I think these guys understand what each person is putting on every day and I think they respect the work they are trying to put on tape. I think when you see fights is when the players are cheap and doing more and really trying to hurt another person’s career. Cueing and playing with effort, technique and a bit of physics doesn’t come cheap. It’s part of football. And I think these guys respect each other.
Saleh’s take is good: Training camp fights may be common in the NFL, but that doesn’t mean they’re acceptable. Saleh presides over a more respectful culture with the Jets.
