If no one could ever replace Jeopardy Beloved Host Alex Trebek, And two ? Jeopardy executive producer Mike Richards has been named the regular host of the game show, and Mayim Bialik, who has starred in Blossom and The Big Bang Theory, will host special episodes.
Richards will begin the 38th season of the game show on September 13. Bialik’s first concert will be the Jeopardy National College Championship.
Richards and Bialik were both among the guest hosts who took turns at the helm of Jeopardy in 2021 as the show tried different contenders, ranging from former champion Ken Jennings to actor LeVar Burton and quarterback of the Green Bay Packers Aaron Rodgers.
Richards has been a controversial, rumored choice – Variety reported in early August that he was the show’s favorite, although other contenders are said to be still in the mix. In addition to his history in producing Jeopardy, Richards has hosted reality shows and game shows, but none is as high profile as Jeopardy.
When the Variety story broke, reports of Richards’ time working on The Price Is Right resurfaced. While there, some models who worked for the series accused the producers of discrimination and harassment. The Daily Beast got a memo from Richards to Jeopardy staff that said, in part, “These are allegations made in employment disputes against the show. I want you all to know how my comments and my actions were characterized in these complaints did not reflect the reality of who I am or how we worked together on The Price is Right. “
Jeopardy fans react
Jeopardy has loyal fans and the social response was immediate. The fact that Richards himself has worked on Jeopardy before has made some fans wonder why a multi-month celebrity hunt was necessary. And some have spoken for other guest hosts, with the Star Trek actor Burton receiving numerous mentions from disappointed supporters.
“After all that… the executive producer of Jeopardy just picked… lmaoooo himself,” one Twitter user said.
Another said: “They went through all these guest hosts just so they could hire a good ol ‘inside grower… TYPICAL.”
Danger has a long history. Iconic talk show host Merv Griffin created the game show in 1964, and it stands out from other quiz shows because contestants are given answers and must answer in the form of a question.
Longtime host Trebek passed away in November 2020 at age 80 with pancreatic cancer. Trebek wasn’t the first Jeopardy host, but he took over in 1984 and is the only host many generations can remember. Her last episode aired on January 8, 2021, two months after her death and just days before Jennings began her guest episodes.
The spectacle is a powerhouse among game shows. Jeopardy has won 39 Daytime Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award, and many countries have created regional versions of the show. Over 8,000 episodes have been broadcast.
