The San Francisco 49ers held their 12th of 13 practices scheduled for training camp today. The team is preparing to welcome the Kansas City Chiefs to Levi’s Stadium on Saturday.
Below are some notes from today’s practice, much of it courtesy of various media sources.
The list is moving
The 49ers have announced the signing of linebacker Donald Payne and the release of wide receiver Kevin White ahead of practice.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported during practice that the 49ers signed security Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.

Defensive end Samson Ebukam, tight end MyCole Pruitt and linebackers Azeez Al-Shaair and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles were equipped but worked on side court.
Injury Updates
Wide receiver Jalen Hurd (knee) returned to practice after being sidelined yesterday with an undisclosed setback. Defensive linemen Arik Armstead (groin) have returned to practice.
Rookie Hype Machine
Today it was linebacker Justin Hilliard’s turn to ignite the fans ahead of practice.
QB watch
Trey Lance got his second rep from training camp behind the first team’s offensive line. This resulted in a successful zone read for running back Trey Sermon. (Sacramento Bee)
Jimmy Garoppolo threw a poorly pitched deep ball down the straight sideline with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk as the target. It was Lance’s turn next, and the rookie hit wide receiver Deebo Samuel perfectly in the same spot for a 40+ yard run. (KNBR) Lance also shot Aiyuk in another shot. (Athleticism)
Garoppolo also knocked down full-back Kyle Juszczyk on the straight sideline while facing pressure from the defense. “He should have been picked by K’Waun Williams as well, but Dr. Greenlaw arrived hot, didn’t see him and knocked him out,” Jake Hutchinson wrote. (KNBR)
At the end of the training, cornerback Jason Verrett intercepted a “horrible” pass from Garoppolo intended for Samuel. (KNBR) It was Garoppolo’s second interception of the day. (Bay Area News Group)
Garoppolo had 13 of 22 assists with two interceptions in team drills. However, there is some debate over this second interception (see below). Lance was 15 of 20 with five points. (Bay Area News Group)
Lance appears to be building up some good chemistry with Trent Sherfield, connecting to the wide receiver several times today, including once under pressure from three defensemen.
“He’s in the right place at the right time,” Lance said of Sherfield after practice. “He’s not cracking up. He’s on a mission all the time, and he’s just the type of guy who comes in first and comes out last.”
Hutchinson seemed very impressed with Lance’s exit, writing: “Honestly, most of Lance’s throws – with the exception of a knocked down ball, almost intercepted on a play that had already died of a sack – were flawless. . He looked, and maybe for the first time in a few practices, like the best quarterback on the team. ” However, he notes that Lance works primarily with and against Second Team units. (KNBR)
Other Notes
It was USC vs. UCLA for what could have been the game of the day. Safety Talanoa Hufanga walked away with a one-handed grab of a deep ball thrown by Josh Rosen. The fifth-round draft pick is turning some heads. (Sacramento Bee)
