CHICAGO – Milwaukee Brewers reliever John Curtiss was entered on the injured list with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow less than two weeks after the team acquired it.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Wednesday Curtiss was getting a second opinion before determining what to do next. Curtiss left in Game 2 of the Brewers’ double sweep against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday with an elbow problem.

The NL Central point guard secured Curtiss, 28, in a trade on July 30 that sent minor league wide receiver Payton Henry to the Miami Marlins. Curtiss went 0-0 with a 12.46 ERA in six games with Milwaukee after going 3-1 with a 2.48 ERA in 35 games with Miami.

“We traded for him with the idea that he is pitching important innings and now that won’t happen again, so we’ll have to change that,” said Counsell.

The Brewers also placed reliever Angel Perdomo on the injured list with low back strain, but other players are returning to bolster a reliever pen that had been wiped out in the past two weeks due to COVID-19 .

Closest to the stars, Josh Hader, is expected to return to the COVID-19 injured list on Thursday. Hunter Strickland and Jake Cousins returned from the COVID-19 injured list in the past two days.

The Brewers have also activated Justin Topa from the 60 Day Injury List. Topa hasn’t pitched for Milwaukee at all this season due to an elbow injury.

Counsell said the Brewers should exercise caution in the way they use Topa, who had launched a rehab mission in the minor leagues.

In other moves, the Brewers recalled lefty Hoby Milner from Triple-A Nashville and sent lefty Aaron Ashby back to Nashville.
