Boyfriend Dungeon, the long-awaited weapon dungeon crawler from developer Kitfox Games, is finally here on PC, Xbox, Switch and Game Pass.
If Boyfriend Dungeon seems like a name that’s been hanging around for a while, you’d be right; it was originally announced in 2017 and managed to raise $ 272,000 in Kickstarter crowdfunding a year later. Since then, Kitfox has been working hard on his mash-up genre quirk – affectionately referred to as “shack-and-slash” – which is part of the dungeon robot (with procedurally generated maps and varied combat styles) and a party dating sim.
“You move into your cousin’s old apartment, with no rent for the summer,” Kitfox explains in a staging episode. “To gain confidence and meet people, and earn some money, you are in charge of eliminating the creatures of the ‘dunj’. Soon you discover weapons. [that] turn into cuties … and they are SINGLES! … But someone removes weapons and leaves them damaged in the dungeon! Who could do such a thing? Will you solve the mystery of the Nap of the Blades? Will you find love? Or, at least friendship? ”.
In total, Boyfriend Dungeon includes seven “bae blades”, designed with an “inclusive and tasteful approach to gender and sexuality” that offers options for male, female and non-binary romance. Here are your potential new weapon friends:
- Estoc (Isaac): the sharpest chest of drawers
- Dagger (Valeria): fed up with stabbing
- Talwar (Sunder): worried about becoming an antique dealer
- Lasersaber (Seven): difficult to master
- Glaive (Sawyer): clumsy in the wrong hands
- Scythe (Rowan): reap what they sow
- Brass Knuckles (Pocket): loves cat naps
“Take your dates out while you learn about their stories and improve them,” says Kifox. “Engage in blossoming relationships with your cute guns as you capture their hearts in friendship and love… improve your skills and fend off monsters together because the couple who kill together stay together.”
Max Love Rank can be achieved either through romantic entanglements or forming strong Platonic friendships, and for players who just can’t settle on one blade, Kitfox says, “Meet them all without worrying, you dual carrier polyarmor “. However, you can’t romance the chat, in case you’re wondering.
Boyfriend Dungeon also offers “basic” support for modifying your own weapon skin on Steam at launch, with Kitfox promising “more features to help you forge your own sharp cuties and trade them with your friends” in the future updates.
Those willing to woo their guns can purchase Boyfriend Dungeon on Switch, Xbox, and PC (via itch.io, Steam, the Windows Store, and Epic) for around £ 15 / $ 19.99 USD. And if you’re a Game Pass subscriber, you can play it for Xbox and PC as well.
