GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Mexican singer Vicente Fernández is hospitalized in the intensive care unit after suffering a fall.
A doctor close to the artist told CNN that the singer underwent neck surgery after being hospitalized in Guadalajara following the fall on Friday.
According to a Facebook post on his official page, Fernandez is in critical but stable condition after injuring his cervical spine in the accident.
The message said he was on a ventilator and in intensive care.
A month ago, on July 9, Fernández left the hospital after recovering from a urinary tract infection, as the artist himself confirmed on social media.
Fernández’s career spans five decades and a discography of over 100 albums, with the singer being regarded by fans as a living legend.
According to its website, The Houston Chronicle nicknamed Fernández “The Sinatra of Rancheras” after a performance at the Hofheinz Pavilion in October 1991.
Sinatra, of course, refers to the blue-eyed crooner Frank, considered one of the greatest artists of our time.
“Until October 11, 1991, no one had ever said that as a singer Fernández was on a par with perhaps the greatest singer in American pop history,” said the Mexican icon’s website about his comparison to the Rat Pack leader.
Ranchera music is a style that predates the Mexican Revolution. It is inspired by a variety of styles, including waltz, polka, and bolero music.
The music is said to take its name literally from the ranch lands, where it was originally played.
Fernández is considered the most famous ranchera singer, known for his charro outfit, wide sombrero and mariachi ensemble. He is also one of the most decorated artists in the world, winning numerous accolades including Grammys and Latin Grammys.
But he also garnered a number of nicknames that cement his iconic status with fans such as El Ídolo de México (the idol of Mexico) in the early 1980s and “El Rey de la Música Ranchera” (The King Ranchera music).
Regarding his health, a Monday night Facebook post appears to be the last mention, explaining that statements will be issued through his medical team.
Fernandez is 81 years old.
