Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy said he didn’t anticipate quarterback Andy Dalton to play much in Saturday’s preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins.
The Bears want to see what they have in first-round pick Justin Fields this preseason. However, Nagy says Dalton has already proven himself to the point where they don’t need to see him get a ton of reps during the preseason.
“If he wasn’t at the point we wanted, we would play him more in the preseason,” Nagy said, via Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times. “He got past that. He could play in a game tomorrow, and I would feel good about that.
Ideally, the Bears put on a quick score and Dalton then takes a seat on the bench.
“If we go out there and score a touchdown on the first disc, I can promise you, if there’s three games it’s out,” Nagy said, via Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune. “But if we want to see more and he feels like he needs more too, we will.” This will be an opportunity for us to talk about it.
Dalton has a proven track record as a competent starting quarterback in the NFL. Although he’s new to the Bears, the team know what to expect from Dalton.
For Fields, this is a chance to make him reps and let him make plays and mistakes in plays that don’t count.
