Warning: this article contains spoilers for Wednesday Riverdale Season 5B premiere.
The good news: RiverdaleJughead’s not in an alien spaceship heading to another planet. Bad news: It is in a truck bound for God knows where.
Wednesday’s Season 5B premiere ended with a tottering Jughead deciding to return to New York to face his demons after a sobering stint in a homeless camp. He got into a strange truck driver’s cab… which, as we know, has so far sounded the death knell for many residents of Riverdale. Additionally, Archie and Veronica agreed not to rekindle things while she is still married to Chad, Betty and Tabitha stumbled together after Jughead’s ex Jessica dosed them with mushrooms from ‘psychedelic maple, and Cheryl found religion and had a vision of her late brother Jason after her mother Penelope started a new church (and possibly a scam) in Thorn Hill.
After all this chaos, TVLine turned to Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa for answers. Read on for the latest news on Archie and Veronica’s relationship, a possible reunion for Betty and Jughead … and Cheryl’s fragile mental state.
TV LINE | We saw Jughead hitchhike and get on that truck at the end of the episode, which we know is bad news. So does that mean her mission and Betty’s will start to overlap?
We will do it one hundred percent. Jughead’s big mystery is sort of unboxing what happened to him during those seven years in New York City, which caused him to leave this crazy post. But he gets involved in the mystery of Betty and the mystery of Polly. At the end of the season, I would say he and Betty are working together to try and bring Polly home.
TV LINE | It looks like Archie and Veronica are getting closer to a reconciliation. Are they, and is Chad out of the question at this point?
Chad is still very present. We have a lot more to do with Chad, unfortunately. [Laughs] I will say that [the premiere], that conversation where Archie and Veronica decide not to get back together and immediately dive into a relationship until they have their house in order is a very fateful decision that will resonate tremendously throughout the rest. of the season. I love this scene, however, towards the end of [the premiere], with Archie and Veronica in the restaurant, because they love each other so clearly and they want to be together so clearly, and KJ [Apa] and Cami [Mendes] have such amazing chemistry. It kind of makes you suffer in this meeting and pray for it.
TV LINE | Speaking of reunions, I have to ask if there’s a chance we see Betty and Jughead fixing things.
I think Betty and Jughead have a lot more distance, a gap to fill than Archie and Veronica. All I’ll say is I think they need to rebuild their friendship first, and they kind of need to unwrap that voicemail, which is so dark, and Cole [Sprouse] committed wholeheartedly. I think they have a bit of a way to go and their own business to sort out. I’ll say that, I think it’s in episode 16, Cole and Lili [Reinhart] having this beautiful scene that almost feels like a one act play, and it’s just the two of them talking about what their life has been like without the other, and it’s so beautiful. He begins to open the door between these two.
TV LINE | So Cheryl has visions of Jason again, and her mother starts this church. Is she heading for another weird Blossom family road here?
I will say it turns into a big story for Cheryl, and yes it does seem to start off as a loony Blossom plot or scam. But for Cheryl, it becomes real and she’s fulfilled in a way she hasn’t felt since Jason. And I will say that we keep pushing beyond even that threshold, and that leads to a very surprising place for Cheryl by the end of the season. It sort of redefines who this character is in an exciting way.
