Who are all these people? If this was your first reaction to the season premiere of The challenge: spies, lies and allies, you are far from alone, my friends.

Welcome to season 37 of the long-running series of reality TV competitions, which has completely morphed into a worldwide phenomenon. Now including participants from foreign franchises such as Big Brother Nigeria, Survivor: Romania, too hot to handle UK and more, 19 junior “agents” now outnumber the 15 returning veterans, which include CT Tamburello, Aneesa Ferreira and Ashley “Millionaire” Mitchell, among others. (Click here for a full cast breakdown.)

What are the new twists of the season, and who was the first duo ousted from the match? Let’s sum up!

WELCOME TO THE (WORST NAMED) CHALLENGE! | At the top, US agents are chained to huge cylinder blocks, while international challengers are tasked with freeing them. He finally selects the duets for the season, which are:

Kelz / Tori, Emmanuel / Kaycee, Kyle / Amanda, Nam / Michele, Josh / Lauren, Logan / Aneesa, Hughie / Ashley, Bettina / Cory, Priscilla / Nelson, Gabo / Nany, Renan / Michaela, Emy / Corey L., Berna / CT, Esther / Fessy, Tracy / Devin, Big T / Tommy and Tacha / Jeremiah.

Once free, the teams must transport a large safe to a decoding station. Using numbers that were on the bricks they just broke, teams must open their vault with the correct combination, grab the gemstone inside, and rush to the end. Aneesa and Logan win the first W of the season, Michaela and Renan coming in second and Tori and Kelz in third. Ashley and Hughie arrive last.

The Challenge Season 37 Premiere Recap AneesaHOW DOES THE GAME WORK ? | As winners, Aneesa and Logan form “The Agency” which protects them from elimination and, of course, empowers them. The house will vote a team for elimination, and the winning pair will select the other competitors.

Back home, Michaela and Renan talk about forming a rookie alliance, but veterans know the numbers well. “If all the vets aren’t on the same page, that’s going to be a problem,” Amanda says. The vets are making a truce not to vote for each other until all other options are exhausted. Let’s see how long this hard.

SPIES, LIES AND GUYS | It doesn’t take long for the romance to blossom. While Michele knows she needs to focus on the game, she can’t help but set her sights on the boys, especially Emmanuel. We also learn that Nelson and Ashley now live in the same town, and these two waste no time flirting. Nany confides in Kyle about his interest in Kaycee, as we are shown clips of the two ladies kissing and kissing. Fessy and Amanda also lock their lips together, and at first glance, it’s gonna be a very busy season.

Last season’s drama between Nelson and Fessy is lifting its head, and Nelson is clearly still pissed off. He doesn’t let go of his vendetta, despite Fessy saying he’s sorry and wishes he could take it back. Most of it falls on deaf ears, but Fessy still seems determined to make up for it.

Meanwhile, no one seems to trust the Survivors in the house, as it is assumed that the former castaways have a good social game and will be adept at stabbing in the back. Rumors are circulating that Michaela has a list of targets to take down, making her the first real enemy of the state this season. Seeing Michaela sink her own battleship causes Tommy and Michele (also former Survivor players) realize they have to lie down loooow.

Challenge 37 MichèleAPPLICATIONS | During the deliberation, Michaela throws Michele squarely under the bus… then refuses to let her speak! Michele makes it clear that she is not aligned with Michaela. Emy and Tommy then directly bury Michaela, confirming that the Survivor the player was indeed targeting veteran Tori. When it comes time to vote, Michaela and Renan unsurprisingly become the first “compromised agents” of the season.

THE DEN | TJ calls Michaela and Renan on the sand, then tells Aneesa and Logan to start another duet… but there’s a twist. Instead of choosing one team to go into battle they can choose any man and woman they want! It’s a mix-and-match style elimination, which frankly changes all. Aneesa and Logan choose Corey L. and Michele to go head-to-head. (Michaela and Michèle in elimination? My Survivor-loving heart breaks here.)

The elimination is called “Back Me Up”. The four opponents are tied together, with the aim of pushing each other off a ramp. It looks like a Twister game from hell. The limbs fly (and sprain), as the four players struggle to stay on the platform. The drop of humans ends up hitting the ground, Renan and Michaela falling first and losing the fight.

As winners, Michele and Corey L. can either stay together as partners, return to their original partners, or sneak in and steal any other player in the game except the Agency. We are then told that Nam had to quit the game (what?) and that a replacement has been selected. (Okay, that’s many information, Teej.) The new challenger is: Ed de The circle!

Decisions are made: Michele steals Devin, while Corey L. steals Tori. Ed and Emy become a new duo, and finally, Tracy and Kelz team up.
