EU examines side effects of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines

Moderna and Pfizer shares sank on Wednesday after the European Union’s medicines regulator said it was investigating possible new side effects from the companies’ COVID-19 vaccines.

This includes inflammation of the kidneys, an allergic skin reaction, and a kidney disorder with significant loss of protein in the urine.

Pfizer is by far the largest supplier of COVID-19 vaccines to the European Union, delivering just over 330 million doses in the region, compared to some 43 million Moderna.

The two companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Reuters.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has not recommended any changes to vaccine labels.

He indicated that the latest assessment is part of the routine updates to the security section of the authorized vaccine database.

He also examines menstrual disturbances as a possible side effect of vaccines, including those from AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson.

Last month, the EMA discovered a possible link between very rare heart inflammation and vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, which use mRNA technology.

However, the European regulator and the World Health Organization have stressed that the benefits of these vaccines outweigh the risks.

The watchdog did not give details on Wednesday on the number of cases of the new side effects recorded, but said it had requested more data from both companies.
