Karl Katzenberger, 80, from Montgomery, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead, according to the Department of Parks and Wildlife. A second person was taken to hospital in stable condition, Keough said.

“Although weather is believed to be the cause of the capsizing, the exact cause has not been determined and the entire incident is under investigation,” he added.

After the rescue, the passengers were decontaminated to remove the diesel before being returned to their cars.

The boat is the Lake Conroe Queen, the Department of Parks and Wildlife told CNN. The double-decker, rear-wheeled pedal boat was built in 1986 and has traveled to Indiana, Colorado and Louisiana for tours and private parties, according to the Lake Conroe website, about 40 miles north of Houston. .
