Michigan MP dies after being shot in chase with gunman

A Michigan lawmaker has died after being injured in a chase that ended in the death of a suspected gunman, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputy Ryan Proxmire died on Sunday, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. He had been in critical condition in a hospital since being shot in the chase.

MPs had met the suspect on Saturday night at a gas station in Galesburg after he was allegedly involved in a lawsuit earlier today with a nearby law enforcement agency.

The suspect allegedly pointed a gun at MPs, got into a vehicle and fled. A chase ensues. During the chase, the sheriff’s office said the suspect opened fire, injuring Proxmire and knocking his car off the road.

The sheriff’s office said the suspect then lost control and pulled off the road in a field. He is accused of going out and firing shots. Other deputies retaliated, killing him.

The name of the suspect was not disclosed by authorities.

Proxmire was assigned to the Sheriff’s Office Highway Patrol Team, but had also worked in the prison and taught other MPs field training, taser use, and control and defense tactics. .
