The Mets ‘high-leverage arms finally had an evening of rest on Sunday, thanks to the Dodgers’ flight with a 14-4 victory.
But the late-inning relievers in the Mets’ paddock put on a heavy workload in the games leading up to Sunday – including Edwin Diaz and Jeurys Familia each throwing three consecutive days – something manager Luis Rojas will then be watching. as the club continue a crucial 13-game stretch in 13 days.
“It’s August, the guys are going to throw three in a row, they’re going to take that day off and bounce back and leave their arm in there for the team,” Rojas said before the Dodgers finished a sweep. dishes. “But we still want to be smart because we want to be done with these guys and we want them to give their best. We are talking about it. We are attentive and we are realistic if they need a day, they need a day and we will give it to them.
Noah Syndergaard (Tommy John surgery) started another bullpen session on Friday and “was feeling great,” Rojas said.
“We’re probably watching him take on hitters next time around,” Rojas said. “I don’t know exactly when it’s going to be.”
The Mets are hoping to get Syndergaard back at some point in September, with interim general manager Zack Scott recently indicating that the right-hander could return as a reliever.
Javier Baez (back spasms) has yet to do baseball activities since being placed on the 10-day injury list on Friday (retroactive to Thursday). He last appeared in a game as a pinch hitter on Wednesday.
Baez is eligible to be off the injured list next Sunday, when the Mets face the Dodgers in Los Angeles, but Rojas has said that will depend on his next few days.
“I still want to see how he progresses with the treatment,” Rojas said. “If he’s not able to do those approaching that 10th day, then it’s probably unrealistic for him to just be activated doing nothing.”
Monday starter Rich Hill flew to San Francisco ahead of Sunday’s team. Rojas had originally announced that Hill would fly with the team after Sunday’s game, but the club were not due to arrive in San Francisco until Monday morning.
