Browns linebacker Mack Wilson sprained his shoulder

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Browns linebacker Mack Wilson avoided a serious injury Saturday night with a sprained shoulder in the team’s opener against the Jaguars, a league source confirmed for Cleveland .com.

“It was early in the game – one of the first two games and just hit that shoulder,” Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said on a Zoom call with reporters on Sunday afternoon. . “Honestly, I don’t know exactly what room it was. I remember very well that he caught it.

Wilson underwent an MRI on Sunday. It tweeted sunday evening, “I’m fine ..” with a prayer emoji and orange and brown hearts.

Brad Stainbrook, who goes by BrownsbyBrad on Twitter, reported Wilson had a Grade 1 shoulder sprain and will miss a few days.

Wilson had a strong start to the Browns’ training camp, grabbing a starting linebacker while rookie Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah missed time on the COVID-19 roster and Tony Fields II came out with a foot injury.

Wilson was among the starting linebackers throughout training camp and started against the Jaguars. He only played four defensive snaps and one special teams snap before leaving the game.

Rookie linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, drafted in the second round in April, played 47 defensive snaps after Wilson left the game. He’s played a number of landmark games, including sacking Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew II in his third defensive snap.

“If you watched him live and even watched him on tape, he was doing plays,” Stefanski said of the rookie. “He made some good tackles along the touchline. He made a beautiful play on this screen. He needs to clean the progress out of his eyes, and he understands that and the coaches are working really hard. “

Wilson, a fifth-round pick in 2019, admitted he was considering quitting football last year when he was not himself after suffering a knee hyperextension during training camp. He was able to come back in Week 3 and started seeing defensive shots again in Week 4, but it wasn’t easy to play despite the injury.

“We go through a lot as football players, and when I got injured it was like one of the worst times of my life,” Wilson said. “I just came back, never felt like I was myself. I didn’t feel like I was producing in the field. I couldn’t move the way I wanted to. I was missing parts that I knew I had to do.

“I was in a dark place.”

Wilson found a spark this year, especially after welcoming a son, Mack Wilson II, to the world on August 4.

“Before (starting training camp), I thought to myself that I was going back to my college mindset, where I feel free,” Wilson said earlier at camp. “Every time I went out on the pitch I felt like I was the meanest person. It’s my mental space right now. This allows me to continue. I just feel like I’m in college again and that’s how you approach it. Have fun and do whatever it takes to help us win.

The opening of the preseason was still costly for the Browns. They likely lost tight end Stephen Carlson, who appeared in all 16 games in 2020, for the season.
