“Boys Don’t Cry”, but fans of The Cure might be crying today. Longtime bassist Simon Gallup said on Saturday he was no longer in the group.
“My heart is a little heavy, I am no longer a member of the Curé!” he wrote on Facebook. “Good luck to everyone…”
When asked if he was okay, Gallup said he was, but “was just fed up with the betrayal.” The 61-year-old rocker did not specify what this “betrayal” was.
Gallup joined The Cure in 1979 and was the oldest member outside of singer and guitarist Robert Smith. He left in 1982 after a breakup with Smith and returned two years later.
Gallup has performed on 11 of The Cure’s 13 studio albums, including 1993’s “Wish” and 2001 “Bloodflowers”, both of which won the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. “Friday I’m In Love” – perhaps their best-known hit – was the second single from “Wish”.
There was no mention of Gallup leaving on The Cure’s official website or on social media accounts on Monday.
