Blue sky, the Twitter-funded effort to create a decentralized social networking standard, ultimately found a project leader – the creator of Happening, Jay graber. Bluesky and Graber have also started hiring the project’s first developers, meaning the slowly developing project may finally become a little less “blue sky” and a little more real.
In addition to his experience leading work on Happening’s event organizing features, Graber has worked on Zcash, a cryptocurrency created by Electric Coin Company that uses zero-knowledge cryptography to secure transactions. Graber was also one of the authors of a Bluesky report released in January detailing his research on decentralized web systems.
While the report doesn’t explain how Bluesky itself would operate, it did highlight some of the areas Graber and his team will need to address once the project brings in a full-time protocol developer and web developer. , such as moderation, privacy and monetization standards. What’s less clear is whether Bluesky will build on existing decentralized projects like ActivityPub, the social networking standard used in Mastodon, or create something new.
