An Ohio mother accused of murdering her son as she tried to abandon him at a nature reserve and run over him when he tried to get back into the car pleaded guilty on Monday to murder and two counts of endangerment of children.

Brittany Gosney, 29, of Middletown, Ohio, argued her case at a court hearing requested by her lawyer who sought to prohibit prosecutors from using statements she made to detectives during the trial.

Gosney faced 16 counts in total and initially pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. She was found fit to stand trial in April following a court-ordered mental assessment. The remaining 13 charges were dismissed as part of his plea deal. She faces life imprisonment when sentenced on September 13.

Gosney’s boyfriend, James Hamilton, 43, has also been indicted in the case and has pleaded not guilty to all 15 counts he faces, including abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence and endangering children. He was due to appear in court later on Monday, but it was not clear whether he would enter pleas.

Authorities said Gosney told investigators she was under pressure from Hamilton to get rid of James Hutchinson, 6, and his two siblings, 9 and 7. Gosney drove the three children to the park in late February, where she planned to abandon them, authorities said, but there is no indication that Gosney intended to kill them. Hutchinson died after grabbing a door of his mother’s vehicle and was dragged away.

Middletown Police Chief David Birk told reporters in March that Gosney’s two other children, who have since been placed in foster care, were inside the car with her during the incident.

Gosney and Hamilton dumped James’ body in the Ohio River near Lawrenceburg, Indiana on February 28, authorities said. Flood conditions initially precluded a search effort there, and the boy’s body has not been found despite multiple searches.
