Princess Diana sings in new deleted scene from “The Crown”

A new deleted scene from season 4 of Netflix’s royal hit “The Crown” further introduces Princess Diana’s troubled relationship with Prince Charles.

In the clip, Emma Corrin, 25, who landed an Emmy nomination and a Golden Globe for the role, performs the song “All I Ask of You” from “The Phantom of the Opera.” The scene is based on a rumor that Diana filmed herself performing the song in the West End as a gift for Prince Charles’ seventh birthday in 1988. The couple would divorce four years later.

In the tale of “The Crown,” Diana, a fan of the musical, hopes this personal gift could mend their rocky marriage and bring the couple closer together. It’s a well-meaning but ill-conceived idea that doesn’t work because Charles, played by Josh O’Connor, is not a fan.

The deleted scene shows Diana thinking alone in her bedroom as she quietly watches a tape of her own performance, where she looks happy to be singing the song on stage.

Corrin, who talks about their pronouns, told Entertainment Tonight that filming the scene was difficult.

“I had a complete panic attack, which actually wasn’t much fun that day,” they said. “I trained as a singer, but it was weird because I had to sing like Diana and as bad as I can get, which was very weird because she hadn’t been trained.”

“The Crown” will continue with Elizabeth Debicki taking on the role of Diana in Seasons 5 and 6, which do not yet have any premiere dates.
