Frozen shrimp recall expanded after more salmonella cases: FDA

The United States Food and Drug Administration’s national recall of frozen shrimp has been extended due to salmonella risks affecting large national store chains like Target, Whole Foods and Meijer.

Avanti Frozen Foods’ growing prawn recall now includes cooked, shelled and deveined products sold nationwide in different package sizes between November 2020 and May 2021, according to FDA officials.

Among the recalled brands are products from large retailers such as Whole Foods’ popular 365 product line, as well as national grocery chains Meijer and Food Lion. Contaminated shrimp may also have been sold to Mai Sushi in certain Target stores in California, as well as to Genji Sushi in certain Whole Foods Markets, also in California.

The FDA first released its national recall of Avanti shrimp products in June. By this point, six people had fallen ill in cases related to the company’s frozen product distributed nationally from late December 2020 to late February 2021.

As of August, nine people in four states – Nevada, Arizona, Michigan and Rhode Island – had contracted salmonella. No deaths have been reported – but three people have been hospitalized, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.

Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, vomiting, and fever. Most victims recover without treatment within a week, but young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems could face more serious illnesses requiring hospitalization, according to the CDC.
