White Sox outfielder Brian Goodwin hit a pitch at Bassitt in the second inning with an exit speed of 100.1 mph, MLB.com reported. The ball hit Bassitt, less than 90 feet, on the right side of his face.
A wide receiver Sean Murphy rushed over to the mound and called for help as Bassitt, bending to the ground, covered his own face, a video on MLB.com shows.
Bassitt, 32, stood there for a few minutes before training staff helped him get on and on a cart, which led him off the field as he held a towel over his face.
Bassitt, an All-Star with a 12-4 record this year, was rushed to hospital.
He was aware “all the time,” A manager Bob Melvin told reporters after the game, a 9-0 White Sox victory.
