Google has started disbanding its healthcare division as it seeks to divide its healthcare projects and teams across multiple areas of the business, Initiated reported on August 20.

The move comes as Google Health chief David Feinberg, MD, announced he would join Kansas City, Missouri-based EHR company Cerner in October as the new president and CEO.

Here are 15 things to know about Google Health’s business strategy and partnerships in 2021 so far, based on reports from Becker Hospital Examination.

Direction and strategy

1. Google said on Aug. 19 that it was dissolving hundreds of its healthcare division employees in existing divisions.

2. Dr. Feinberg, vice president of Google Health, has left the company after three years as CEO of Cerner, the company announced on August 19.

3. Google Health had 700 employees, but began moving more than 130 employees to other areas of the business, including research and the newly acquired Fitbit Group, Insider reported on June 17.

4. Dr Feinberg told the Wall Street Journal’s June 9 health tech conference that Google Health doesn’t care if its healthcare business can make a profit. He said the division is focused on global impact and that while businesses are expensive, revenue is an afterthought.

The center will focus on using AI to solve the problems and inefficiencies facing the medical field, with Verily picking up on some of Google Health’s projects, including the company’s initiative exploring the use of IA in colorectal cancer screenings.

YouTube launched an initiative to fight health disinformation, which had three main goals: to eliminate disinformation, reduce its spread and promote credible sources of health information, he told Becker’s in July.
