Tropical Storm Henri brings storm surge and flood warnings to the northeast

A “dangerous storm surge” is expected to hit the northeast on Sunday morning or early afternoon, as Hurricane Henri has been downgraded to a tropical storm, according to a new advisory.

But the National Hurricane Center on the 8 am alert predicted tropical storm conditions would begin “within the next two hours”, strong gusts of wind and flooding over large swathes of the northeast.

The downpour from the storm could cause flash floods as well as river flooding in parts of Long Island, New England, according to the NHC.

A “storm surge warning” is in effect for the south shore of Long Island from Mastic Beach to Montauk Point New York, the north shore of
Long Island from Montauk Point to Flushing New York, Flushing New York to Chatham Massachusetts, as well as Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard and Block Island, according to an update from Hurricane Henri.

Slightly less severe “storm surge watch” is in effect for East Rockaway Inlet to Mastic New York, north of Chatham Massachusetts to Sagamore Beach Massachusetts and Cape Cod Bay.

Previously, a hurricane warning was in effect in parts of Long Island, Connecticut and Rhode Island, before being downgraded Sunday morning.

A hurricane warning is in effect for the south shore of Long Island from Fire Island Inlet to Montauk Point, the north shore of Long Island, from Port Jefferson Harbor to Montauk Point, New Haven Connecticut west of Westport Massachusetts, according to NHC.

In New York City, a tropical storm warning is in effect, according to the advisory. The tropical storm warning also applies to Port Jefferson Harbor west of New Haven Connecticut, to the south shore of Long Island from west of Fire Island Inlet to East Rockaway Inlet, from Westport Massachusetts to Chatham Massachusetts, including Martha’s Vineyard
and Nantucket, and New Jersey west of East Rockaway Inlet to Manasquan Inlet.

At 7 a.m., the storm was moving north at 18 mph, with sustained winds reaching 70 mph, a notice warned. On Sunday, images tweeted around 7 a.m. were released. Flood disrupting traffic on roads causing a road closure in Middlesex County, New Jersey.

Hurricane Henri began to wreak havoc in New York City early Sunday, causing flooding that delayed subways and disrupted vehicle traffic. It came after heavy rains on Saturday night prematurely ended the city’s long-awaited “come home concert” held in Central Park.
